“The UIM is the international governing body of power boating. It is recognized as such by the International Olympic Committee, and is also a member of the General Association of International Sports Federations, and the Association of the IOC Recognized International Sports Federations. The sport governs all power boating disciplines including Aqua bike, Circuit, Offshore, Pleasure Navigation & Radio-controlled.
The hub of the Union, clearing house for all contacts with and from its member nations, a total now risen from twelve in 1927 to fifty two in 2008, is its registered office within Monaco´s Stade Louis II permanent sporting complex. The offices is staffed by the UIM´s permanent full-time Secretary General and by the administrative assistants.
Every other office, function and activity within this international governing body is contributed on a voluntary basis by the individuals concerned and for the most part, expenses by the national authorities from which these individuals come, though some choose to fund their own activities to the wider benefit of all. The ultimate authority in the sport is vested in the UIM´s General Assembly which is made up of one delegate from each sanctioned national authority and meets annually. In recent years and indicative of the wider ranging interests of the UIM, the location of the General Assembly has been alternated between various international venues Monaco, Miami, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi, Cancun, Istanbul, Cape Town, Singapore, Portimao, Doha, Kuala Lumpur, Antalya and the Gold Coast of Australia a precedent now established.
Responsible to the General Assembly for the management of the UIM is the Council, made up of the President, the Administrators and the Commission heads which meets as often as necessary to ensure the smooth running of the Union. The Council elects among its members, the Senior Vice President, the Vice President, the Legal Consultant and the Treasurer as Executive Committee Members. The Executive Committee deals with the UIM Administration under the absolute control of the Council. The Council is also the body which appoints the permanent Secretary General, a non-voting, ex-officio member of all Committees and Commissions who heads up the Union´s administrative and personnel department.
If the General Assembly is the supreme authority and the Council – guided by the Executive Committee - is the power base of the UIM, it is the Commissions which make the sport work. It is the elected representatives of these Commissions from Offshore (COMINOFF), Medical and Safety (COMINSAFE), Sports (COMINSPORT), Formulae Committees, Safety Cockpit , Technical (COMINTECH), Aquabike, to Pleasure Navigation.
In the quest of increasing media exposure, improvement of financial independence, and geographic growth, the UIM has contracted promoters dealing with the flagship classes of its different racing disciplines such as Class I Offshore, F1 and F2 Circuit, Aquabike Class Pro and P1 Powerboat within Pleasure Navigation.
At any one time, it is possible to have more than 150 enthusiastic individuals voluntarily giving their time to the task of making powerboat racing sport safer and more effective.” - Source www.uimpowerboating.com
